Maine has over 1,000 dams that have directly caused the decline of Atlantic salmon and other native sea-run fish, plus over 25,000 road stream crossings with over half likely undersized or inadequate for effect fish passage . Since 2000, the Atlantic Salmon Federation’s Maine Headwaters Project has proven that reconnecting headwater streams and rivers to the ocean offers the best chance for restoring Maine’s 12 species of sea-run fish to abundance. We are excited to share our story with you, including a feature of our video with glimpses of rare footage of wild Atlantic salmon documented last summer in Maine. You will see about a dozen of the 1,700 adults that returned to the rivers of Maine in 2020. A small fraction of the historic runs but an uptick from just a decade ago and a result of Atlantic Salmon Federation’s Maine Headwaters Project successes.
