HARDY CUP

Saturday, August 5, 2023

Entry is FREE and open to everyone who wishes to participate: no separate divisions for Age, Sex, etc.  THIS IS A FUN EVENT AND ALL ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN IN!

Entrants are limited to using bamboo fly rods by any maker, past or present, up to and including 8' in length and taking a fly line up to but no heavier than 5 weight.  Modern, over-the-counter fly lines by any maker are allowed.  NO "custom" fly lines!

Leaders are to be supplied by the contestants and must be between 7 1/2 and 9 feet in length, any tippet diameter.  Judges will measure the leader.

A “Hookless Fly” will be used for scoring both Distance and Accuracy. The "Hookless Fly" will be a tuft of yarn applied to the contestants' leader by one of the judges and trimmed to measure 1/2 inch.

Judges will have FINAL SAY as to whether a contestant's outfit meets the above criteria and is within the rules

Casting scores will be based on CUMULATIVE POINTS for both Distance and Accuracy events.  TWO casts for Distance, TWO casts for Accuracy.

Participants will be allowed to practice their casting in both Distance and Accuracy ON A SEPARATE COURSE before actual scoring casts are made on the designated course.

Points to be awarded for TWO Distance casts, with ONE POINT awarded for EACH FOOT of the cast from the designated casting point to the final RESTING point of the FLY WITHIN THE COURSE BOUNDARIES.

Additional points can be accrued by placing the regulation hookless fly in the two 30” target rings set at 25 and 40 feet.  ONE CAST at each ring. Placing the fly in a ring will count 50 points towards the final score.  Up to 100 additional points can be accrued by placing the fly in both rings.

Where the Fly COMES TO REST will determine both distance and the accuracy.  For Distance, even if the Fly COMES TO REST behind the farthest distance the fly line has traveled, i.e., closer to the caster, the position of the Fly will determine the length of the cast.

In the Accuracy component, the Fly must COME TO REST either within the target hoop or resting on the hoop itself.  “Hovering” the fly over the target during false casting will be allowed.

A hypothetical score:  First Distance cast 73', second cast 68' = 141 points.  First Accuracy Cast 50 points, Second Accuracy Cast 0 points, = 50 points for a combined total of 191 overall points.

In the event of a tie, the tied casters will have a Cast Off of two distance and two accuracy casts each.

Hardy and the CFFCM reserve rights to make any necessary changes to the above rules at any time BEFORE the first contestant begins to cast.

1st Prize: A Hardy Rod and Reel outfit of the winner’s choice.

2nd Prize: A Hardy Reel of the winner’s choice.

3rd Prize: A Hardy Rod of the winner’s choice.
