Join us for an author talk & book signing with David Coggins on Saturday May 29, 2021 under the pavilion to hear about his newly released title The Optimist: A Case For The Fly Fishing Life
Author of the New York Times bestseller Men and Style, David Coggins is a rare combination of angler, journalist, traveler, and style expert. In The Optimist, he fishes some of the world’s most prized and rarefied waters, including the majestic rivers of Montana, the Limay in Patagonia, and the shallows of the Bahamas; he casts for Atlantic salmon in a Crown-owned river in Canada, and for striped bass off the coast of JFK airport.
The Optimist celebrates specific angling skills—casting, selecting flies, fighting fish. It also champions more universal virtues: patience, careful observation, self-containment. And true to its title, The Optimist imparts Coggins’s and fellow anglers’ hard-earned wisdoms:
“You are one cast away from being a genius.”
Catching a trout is “like being the parent of a teenager. You allow the fish to seem in control.”
“The Atlantic salmon will test friendships and bank accounts.”
“Beer after you’ve caught a fish tastes monumentally better than beer when you haven’t caught a fish.”
