Entomology 101: What the Fly Fisher Needs to Know

A challenge facing those who are interested in becoming fly fishers is the relatively steep learning curve associated with this sport and this if often overcomplicated to the point where it becomes a ‘turn off’ for those who want to continue fly fishing. However, the entomology of fly fishing need not contribute to this complexity –aquatic insects and their relatives can be reduced to relatively few groups that comprise the majority of a fish’s diet. In this presentation I will focus on what a fly fisher needs to know in terms of identifying and properly presenting aquatic organisms that are central to fly fishing.

Michael Parrella is in his 6 th year as Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Professor of Entomology at the University of Idaho. Prior to coming to Idaho, he was Chair of the Department of Entomology & Nematology and Associate Dean for Agricultural Programs at the University of California Davis where he taught multiple classes focused on Entomology & Fly Fishing. He has given numerous presentations to fly fishing clubs in the western US. Dean Parrella is an emeritus faculty member at UC Davis and is both a Fellow and Past President of the Entomological Society of America.
